Also the companions are rather forgettable, a shame considering how much people love them in BG and Torment. It suffers a bit in how dense and committed it can be to its own lore, to the point that it can be a real deterrent to those not motivated to dive in. The foundation is all there including an updated, but similar combat structure(despite the removal of D&D) and even the narrative progression(chosen one, giant freeform Act 2 centering around a massive city, etc.). Pillars of Eternity is a pretty strong modernization of what people remember loving about the Baldurs Gate saga. What are your favorites of the lot? Any I've forgotten about? What's your take on RTWP vs. But the look, and the world, and the characters of Pillars is still so engrossing. I much prefer turn-based combat, like in Divinity. It's just too stressful sometimes and the amount of micromanaging in the harder battles can be frustrating. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the 'real time with pause' style combat. Not to mention, the lore and fiction they've crafted for the world is so dense, you really get the feeling for the passion they had for it. I've always enjoyed fantasy more than post apocalyptic stuff, or cyberpunk stuff for that matter. If I had to pick a favorite, it's probably Pillars. Lately I've been getting back into Pillars and Wasteland 2 and enjoying both of them. I haven't beaten any of them, unfortunately, as my desire to play kinda comes in fits and spurts of about 12-15 hours at a time. Whatever the reason, I ended up picking up Divinity, Pillars, and Wasteland 2 when they came out and have put a fair amount of time into each of them. Perhaps it's the fact that for years I've wanted to play a tabletop RPG for real but been unable to, or maybe just the more demanding design sensibilities. I never actually played any CRPG's back in their heyday, but there's something about these games that grabbed me when they started coming back around.

There's a dedicated fanbase to these type of games who have likely grown into having more expendable income and a strong desire for a return to form for the genre fueled by years of relative inactivity. Obviously, most of these are Kickstarter funded, and I think some of the only real success stories to come from Kickstarter-funded game development are on the CRPG front. Not to mention, the trend is hardly over. I can't really pinpoint when the trend started, but I wanna say Wasteland 2? Either way, over the past few years we've been positively awash with brand new CRPGs.
